Linde, Celanese expand CO2, hydrogen agreement for Texas methanol production

Industrial gases and engineering company Linde said it has expanded their current agreement with US-based acetyls producer Celanese to provide carbon dioxide (CO2) and hydrogen to their manufacturing facility in Clear Lake, Texas.

These products will aid in producing a lower-carbon methanol at the Celanese’s Fairway Methanol joint venture with Mitsui & Co. The CO2 will be captured at Linde’s carbon monoxide (CO) production facility.

“[T]he work we are doing with recycled carbon dioxide at our Clear Lake facility is a significant step forward in our efforts to preserve the environment and be a responsible community partner,” said John Fotheringham, senior vice president of acetyls at Celanese. “By working with Linde, we expect to produce lower carbon intensity methanol with a high capital efficiency at a competitive cost.”

Currently, Linde provides oxygen, nitrogen and CO to the Clear Lake facility.

Supplies from this agreement are expected to start in H1 2023.
